The southern federal university is a faculty with 100 years of history. The university has experienced and witnessed a lot more than expected in its relatively short history. This university was established after the world-war 1. This university was the affiliate of the Warsaw Imperial university. After the WW1, when the Russian professors if the university of Warsaw were expelled and deported from Poland, they moved to Rostov and established this university. Later, during the Russian revolution and civil war, this university was controlled by the anti-Soviet parties and the white movement.

The university was named the Rostov state university for many years. After many years, in 2006, several universities in the Rostov were merged into this university and it was renamed as the Southern federal university.

The university is one of the leading research centers in Russia. They emphasize both fundamental and applied research in many areas. The main areas of emphasis are artificial intelligence, smart control systems, biomedical engineering and etc. There are also several multi-disciplinary research areas underway in this university.

There are more than 44000 students actively studying at this university. There are about 5000 academic staff employed by the university in different departments. There are two main campuses, one in the city of Rostov and the other in Taganrog. Several faculties are located in each of these campuses.

Faculty of Chemistry

The faculty of chemistry of the southern federal university is known for its excellence and great chemists all along its history. The faculty consists of 12 departments, including the physical chemistry department, medical chemistry department, organic chemistry department and some more.

Faculty of mathematics, mechanics and computer sciences

This faculty is the largest faculty of the university. There are 5 departments in different science areas including mathematics, applied mathematics, mechanics, information technology and information systems.
